Video guide
Step by step
- 1
Check you're eligible
You need a full UK (or GB-exchanged) driving licence held for at least 12 months, the right to work in the UK, and to be old enough under the council's current policy. Check the council's latest driver policy before you spend money.
- 2
Apply for an Enhanced DBS check
Apply for an Enhanced DBS with checks of both the adult and child barred lists for taxi/private hire work, through the route the council accepts. Join the DBS Update Service as soon as your certificate arrives.
- 3
Book your Group 2 medical
Complete the council's medical form (to DVLA Group 2 standard) with a doctor who can see your medical history. Make sure every section, including eyesight, is filled in and signed.
- 4
Complete training and assessments
Complete the council-required safeguarding / child sexual exploitation awareness training and any knowledge, English or driving assessment the council currently requires. Keep your certificates.
- 5
Apply online
Create an account on the City of Wolverhampton Council licensing portal, upload your documents (licence, DBS, medical, right to work, certificates, photo) and pay the application fee.
- 6
Collect your badge
Once checks are complete the council issues your licence and badge. Keep your details up to date and diary your renewal and DBS/medical dates.
Tips & pointers
- Join the DBS Update Service within 30 days of your certificate date — otherwise you may have to pay for a new DBS later.
- Medical forms are the most common reason for delays: check every box, signature and stamp before uploading.
- Scan documents in colour, clearly, all four corners showing. Blurry uploads get sent back.
- Declare everything honestly — convictions, cautions and points. Non-disclosure is treated more seriously than the offence itself.
- Fees and requirements change; always check the council's current fee list and policy before applying.
- Once licensed, you can work for any operator licensed by Wolverhampton — including SafeRide at only 15% commission.
